Paris suffers worst floods in 100 years and Louvre museum cellars are emptied for first time since WW2

In the Loire Valley, a lake of floodwater gathered in front of the Chateau of Chambord, causing a watery reflection of the much-visited 16th century castle


Water continued to risk this evening as the Seine flooded walkways and embankments in the area near the Eiffel Tower in Paris


Cars are submerged in a flood street in Souppes Sur Loing, 60 miles south of Paris, which has been inundated with heavy rain

The Louvre Museum in central Paris was closed by officials so they could move artworks from the basement up on to the higher floors


While the Louvre’s most famous painting, Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa,’ was safe on an upper floor, officials said about 250,000 artworks were located in flood-risk areas, mostly in basement storerooms
